Therapy for stress and overwhelm

Stress is not always something to eliminate; some pressure is unavoidable. Problems arise when demands consistently exceed recovery, support or a sense of control.

What might be useful to understand

A therapist may help untangle practical pressures from emotional habits such as over-responsibility, difficulty setting boundaries or constant self-criticism. Sessions can make room for decisions as well as coping skills.

There is no need to settle on a treatment model before contacting a practitioner. A first conversation can help clarify the question you want to explore, and a suitable therapist should explain options without promising a guaranteed result.

Choosing support that fits

Bring an example of a difficult week and consider which demands can change. For workplace problems, also ask about organisational supports or workplace protections rather than treating the problem as purely personal.

Check qualifications, fees, confidentiality and whether appointments are available in person or online. If the work calls for medical assessment or specialist care, your GP can help explore alternatives.

Questions worth asking

How do we distinguish manageable stress from burnout? Can we work on boundaries? Is short-term therapy appropriate?

You can ask for clear answers and take time to decide. Therapy should be a collaborative process grounded in informed consent and an appropriate professional relationship.

Taking the next step

If you would like to explore an appointment, you can send a contact-only enquiry. We ask only for the details needed to respond about a possible introduction. This does not book or confirm a clinical appointment.

For a diagnosis, urgent need or health concerns, start with your GP or an appropriate health service. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 000.
